Apply For UJW’s 2023 Session

The Washington Association of Black Journalists is now accepting applications for the Winter/Spring 2023 session of its annual Urban Journalism Workshop (UJW), a training program for Washington D.C. area high school students.

Our application deadline has been extended to January 14, 2023.

The program runs from March to May with a certificate ceremony in June. Accepted students are immersed in the fundamentals of journalism over eight consecutive Saturdays. Skills are acquired and or reinforced in print/digital, radio/audio, video/television, and social media.

As a UJW student, you will learn from current and former working journalists, build your body of journalistic work and connect with other possible future professional journalists. Eligible high school seniors can also apply for the George E. Curry UJW Scholarship.

Some UJW alumni now work or have previously worked for The New York Times, ESPN, The Associated Press, Sirius XM as well as local TV network affiliates.

UJW has been in existence since 1986. Our goal is to develop the skills of the next generation of journalists with a commitment to increase the participation of diverse and underrepresented groups in media.

That said, any students that are interested, are welcome to apply.

Journalists who currently work at The Washington Post, USA Today, NPR, The Washington Informer, ABC, and other media entities volunteer to train and assist UJW students.
